Port wine storage systems are one of the most important wine racking systems for

two important reasons. Firstly fortified wines are often aged for a considerable

which should be relatively undisturbed during the bottle ageing process. Therefore

is red, though certain white ports may be age worthy also. The temperature to store
red wine varies according to the type of wine and desired cellaring times. Most
red wine should be stored at 13°C or approximately 55°F. Porto is no different,
though as stated this low temperature is especially important for a wine designed
and built to age slowly. Humidity control is particularly important to port wine
storage as most vintage port is still sealed with traditional cork closures. This
is hardly surprising given that Portugal is the worlds leading producer of cork!
Though vintage port is the most often collected and stored by wine lovers all port
styles can benefit from proper storage. These other style includes ruby, dry, white,
reserve and even cheap non Portuguese fortified wines. How to store wine should
be one of the most important questions any serious port collector asks himself.
Vintage port can be for sale at extremely high prices and such an investment should
be protected by proper storage wine. Whether you have a cellar, wine rack, vault,
retail shop or chiller pay particular attention to the control of constant temperature
and humidity when storing port wine.
